How to get into games if I'm NEW?
Sample MEMBER Struggling to get into Good Games.

Here are some tips:

1. Properly describe your playing history.
2. Rate yourself using our system properly (INT1/INT2/ADV/ADV2) obtained
here:
3. Use you profile picture wisely! Event organizers feel less secure giving a spot to a logo. Don't be shy, put up a clear recent photo of yourself!
4. Be proactive and courteous! Contact the organizer or be active on the forums.
5. Organize a game of your own! It's easy to book with the lcsd
here

Just remember, event organizers wants to meet new buddies too. Its just that before they give out a spot, they want to make sure that they're giving it to someone who will be nice to play with, reliable, and at the required level.
They're not passing you up on purpose (if they are), they just don't know you yet.

So let them know who you are, start with the profile picture, then your description and play ability. Should do wonders for your RSVP as a newbie!

If you are new, and signing up for a game with only 12 players (we need 6 on a side to play). Chances are you won't get in because the Event organizers would worry if in the case of your last minute cancellation, you may not know anyone to sub for you as replacement. Also, if you no-show they don't have a recourse. Opening up communications and keep confirming your attendance is a good way to gain the Organizers trust.

Since the admins can see your no-show and sometimes cancellation history, it is imperative that you respect the courtesy rules at all time especially when you are new where they don't have much to go on.

Things Happen, Got to back out. What do I do?

Be considerate, courteous and proactive. Shouldn't be a problem:

If there is a waitlist:

1. Let the event organizer know as soon as possible. Ask him/her who should be the next in line.

2. Offer to contact them and confirm the sub/switch.

3. Contact the organizer once a sub has been confirmed, communicated and arranged and ask them to update the RSVP.

If there is no waitlist:

1. Let the event organizer know as soon as possible.

2. Find a replacement at your rated play level and ask them to sign up for the event.

3. Let the event organizer know to put them in.

Remember, Admins can see your NO SHOW history. This could possibly be the reason why you get passed up for spots!

I have perfect attendance. Why did I just get bypassed?

Check whether or not you have are at the appropriate play level. Advanced players signing up for an Intermediate game may be bypassed for other intermediate players and vice versa. Gender Mix: Did the Event organizer specify gender ratios or types of games he/she wanted? Sportsmanship: Have other members filed complaints about your behavior? Do you make other players uncomfortable. Do you think and act like you're God's gift to volleyball? Do you talk down to others? Too Mysterious: Are you too much of a mystery? Do you have a profile picture or play history properly described in your profile?

If you are sure it's none of the above, it could just be an oversight. Please email or contact the Event Organizer and get some feedback from them. Hopefully, it will get sorted out in no time.

How do I get rated?

Contact any Admin you meet at the games to begin the process. Introduce yourself and express your interest to be rated. They will bring your request back to the Admin group. Ratings are generally processed twice a month unless the admin decides to fast-track your request - which means that he is vouching for your rating individually and will be required to re-rate you if other admins challenge the rating or disagree.

Who are the Admins?
Guillaume is the founder of this group and including him we have a group of 12 admins. You will see [ADMIN] next to their play level on their profiles. Look for them in your games and say hello! The other 11 are listed here.

I don't agree with my rating. What do i do?
The best way is to keep playing and make it known to the admins that you are looking for a ratings upgrade/downgrade. Admins are also proactively watching borderline players and we do include these players in our biweekly ratings discussion. In more advanced play, positions and rotations are critical prerequisites but are not the only requirements. If you receive a lower rating than you expect, sending a nasty email or withdrawing from the group is not really going to improve the situation. Our admin ratings policy clearly specifies that we will require the opinions of at least more than one admin therefore chances are that there may be valid reasons for their preliminary assessment. Maybe you're just having a bad day, rusty from not playing in years, or you are a setter but asked to play middle blocker or vice versa... Whatever the reason is, it's not up to the admins to discover that, it's your responsibility to seek out admins you've played with and make them aware of your improvements so that they can bring your case to the group. However, it is common courtesy to just deal with one admin at a time. Going to multiple admins may not seem appropriate and creates extra work for everyone.

I'm not getting what I want from the meetup, what do I do?

HKVB is a not for profit platform and admins and organizers are not paid hosts or staff. The rules and policies set-forth in our meetup group is our current best attempt at governing this open platform and it isn't by any means expected to be perfect - it will continuously be a work in progress. Volunteer members in good standing are selected as admins and we meet up several times a year to improve on the process and do welcome suggestions from all our members at all play levels. We hope that you will respect and understand that our policies are there for a reason and work with us constructively to improve it. However, the best way to ensure that you get the game and treatment you want is to book your own venue and be your own EVENT HOST. Anyone can be one, and you can call the shots and modify our umbrella courtesy rules to fit your event. Ask any admin to upgrade your access level once you have obtained a venue and you can post your own meetup right away!
